LG To Debut Second Intel-Powered Smartphone At CES 2012

“If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.” It looks like LG and Intel have taken that old adage to heart, if a new report is to be believed. The Korea Times reports that LG will debut an Intel-powered smartphone at CES 2012, but the bigger question is whether or not the device will ever make it to market.
LG and Intel’s first mobile partnership yielded an Android smartphone running on Intel’s Moorestown chipset for CES 2011, but the device was ultimately scrapped. The reason for its premature demise? As the story goes, the device died because of it’s “lack of marketability.”
LG’s brass certainly thinks their Intel smartphone is viable — according to one of the Times’ executive sources, the device could be released as soon this March. Still, the original LG-Intel phone was pegged with a 2011 release date, so take those claims with a grain of salt for bow.
Hopefully LG’s second swing at an Intel-powered phone fares a little better — it’s said to run on Intel’s next-generation Medfield system-on-a-chip, and early tests have yielded some pretty impressive benchmarks when compared to NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8260 SoCs.
Of course, the real competition is yet to come, as nearly every player in the mobile chipset market is hard at work on their next-generation platforms. Intel has a lot of brand recognition when it comes to PCs, but their lack of presence in the mobile market to date could mean that Medfield could drown in a sea of established ARM-based chipsets.
That’s why the partnership with LG is so critical — despite their handset division spending a few quarters in the red, LG is still the number two handset OEM in the U.S. Having a major hardware vendor taking a chance on their new platform could establish Intel as a real player in the mobile space, and right now Intel’s mobile efforts could use all the visibility they can get.

Again Motorola DROID 4 Leaked – Demo Unit Pictured In The Wild

There’s pretty much nothing we don’t already know about Motorola’s worst kept secret, the Droid 4, other than an actual release date. With that being said, the “Razr with a keyboard” is actually looking more like the Bionic from the latest leaked pics taken by John and team at TechnoBuffalo who got some hands-on with a demo unit earlier today.

The device, while not exactly a working model (more of those shells you find on display at Best Buy) does give us a better look at it, with pictures showing off every angle. The Droid 4 will most likely make an appearance at CES 2012 next month of which the entire Phandroid staff we be on hand bringing you the very latest in Android tech.

MAPTOR ! GPS

Maptor is this wonderful combination of a map and projector that (predictably) projects the desired map onto any surface. Palm of the hand, floor, and walls included. What I really fancy about it, is its size. Small enough to pass off as a lipstick (or a chapstick for you guys), the device is discreet enough for you to quickly hop into a quiet corner, check for directions and make your way forth. All this without anyone knowing that you are lost or need help!

Another good thing about the Maptor is that it has GPS included; as a result there is this big red arrow on the map that points to your current location. Therefore getting your bearings and charting your course is easy.
Although the images of the projected map look visible enough even in daylight, I wonder if it’s really going to be that clear in its practical avatar.
Anyways, I think this project has the potential to make it to the market and be a hit, I would love to get one for my husband, who hates to ask for directions!

The First iPad Stylus With an On-Screen Cursor

Billed as an "active stylus" for the iPad, the iPen can be recognized by the tablet even when the tip hovers above the display. Allowing for improved stylus accuracy, but also facilitating an on-screen cursor.
That might not seem like a big deal for a device designed to be used with taps and swipes, but anyone who's ever used a Wacom tablet with a PC will appreciate having that visual cue of where exactly the tip of the stylus has been detected.
The peripheral—which attaches to the iPad's dock port—uses the same ultrasonic technology that lets those smart pens capture handwritten notes. But I think it's put to better use here.
As you can see in the video, the iPen allows for extremely detailed and precise pen strokes. Which will be appreciated by artists, and should vastly improve the capabilities of handwriting recognition software. Because it's a third-party peripheral, apps have to be specifically written to take advantage of what the iPen can do. But the company behind it has already lined up considerable support from App Store developers. And since they've more than raised the $35,000 they were seeking through Kickstarter, you might actually be able to buy one in the near future. [Kickstarter via John Nack]

Google begins rolling out ICS update to the GSM Nexus S

The Android Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade news continues but this time, it is not the Galaxy Nexus getting the update but its older sibling, the Nexus S.

Yes, Google has finally started rolling out the highly anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich update to Nexus S update. Google plans to gradually update all the Nexus S devices to the latest version of Android in the coming month. This version is actually the 4.0.3 that was just announced by Google and even the Galaxy Nexus is not running it at the moment.
There is one small problem, though. The update is only available to the GSM/UMTS version of the Nexus S for the moment and not the CDMA version used by Sprint customers in the US. When it will be out is not known at the moment.
The update will be made available over-the-air, so you can manually check on your phone or wait for the notification to appear. However, if your patience has run thin then you will be glad to know that the ICS ROM is available for download and install manually for those who know what they are doing. If you want to find out how to do that, click on the source link below.

Microsoft launches So.cl social network for students

Microsoft officially took the wraps off of its new social network for students on Thursday. The service is called So.cl and was developed by Microsoft Research’s FUSE Labs division. It’s currently in “experimental” stages and is available to students attending the University of Washington, New York University and Syracuse University. So.cl allows users to log-in with their Facebook accounts and offers a similar set of features. In addition to adding status updates, photos and links, users can also join “video parties” to watch movies and chat with a group of friends. “So.cl is not meant to replace existing full-featured search and social networking tools,” Microsoft said on its So.cl FAQ page. “It is an experimental research project using a minimal set of features which help combine search with the social network for the purpose of learning.”

Ice Cream Sandwich tablet interface found inside Galaxy Nexus

So now that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has been out for a whole day, obviously someone should have broken into it and found something cool by now. Michael Crider over at Android Community has done just that.

Crider states that when Google said that Ice Cream Sandwich would swap interfaces depending on the type of device it was running on, he got to thinking about the smartphone launcher that was found hidden in Honeycomb. After rooting his new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, he changed the LCD density to a lower value; in essence tricking the phone into thinking it had a ten-inch screen, and presto, a basic tablet interface running on a Galaxy Nexus.

While the trick works, the phone is pretty much unusable in this state, unless, as Crider says, you have “tiny fingers and amazing eyesight.” He does suggest that this could prove to be quite useful when using the phone with an external display such as a television or a projector.

There are more in-depth instructions on how to do this over at Android Community, but as he warns, the procedure gives you a good chance at breaking your new phone.

Android 4.0 for Users

Simple, beautiful, beyond smart

Android 4.0 builds on the things people love most about Android — easy multitasking, rich notifications, customizable home screens, resizable widgets, and deep interactivity — and adds powerful new ways of communicating and sharing.

Refined, evolved UI

Focused on bringing the power of Android to the surface, Android 4.0 makes common actions more visible and lets users navigate with simple, intuitive gestures. Refined animations and feedback throughout the system make interactions engaging and interesting. An entirely new typeface optimized for high-resolution screens improves readability and brings a polished, modern feel to the user interface.

Virtual buttons in the System Bar let users navigate instantly to Back, Home, and Recent Apps. The System Bar and virtual buttons are present across all apps, but can be dimmed by applications for full-screen viewing. Users can access each application's contextual options in the Action Bar, displayed at the top (and sometimes also at the bottom) of the screen.

Multitasking is a key strength of Android and it's made even easier and more visual on Android 4.0. The Recent Apps button lets users jump instantly from one task to another using the list in the System Bar. The list pops up to show thumbnail images of apps used recently — tapping a thumbnail switches to the app.

Porting Siri to iPhone 4 now legal following iOS 5.0.1 update

IPhone 4 owners looking to take advantage of Apple’s Siri software from the iPhone 4S now have one less barrier standing in their way. Sure, plenty of tricks have been available in the past that allow users to hack Siri onto an iPhone 4, but until now they were illegal. Apple’s recent iOS 5.0.1 update, however, has a decrypted ramdisk, which means users can legally port files to the iPhone 4 that were previously encrypted and protected by Apple’s public distribution policies. Apple may re-encrypt the files in iOS 5.1, which is expected to launch in the near future, so move quick if you want to take advantage of this loophole.

Samsung Galaxy Note may be headed to AT&T early next year

The supersized Samsung Galaxy Note may land on AT&T early next year. Pocketnow said Friday that the device could also pack support for AT&T’s 4G LTE network when it does. The Galaxy Note is equipped with a huge 5.3-inch Super AMOLED screen and, due to its size, is often considered the most tablet-like phone on the market. The AT&T version of the device will reportedly be powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8660 processor, as opposed to the 1.4Ghz dual-core Samsung Exynos chip used in the European version, and offers an 8-megapixel camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat and massive 2,500 mAh battery. Unfortunately, rumors suggest the device will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) when it launches, as opposed to the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. AT&T and Samsung may announce the U.S. availability during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Android 4.0.3 Platform

Android 4.0.3 is an incremental release of the Android 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich) platform family. This release includes new features for users and developers, API changes, and various bug fixes.

For developers, the Android 4.0.3 platform is available as a downloadable component for the Android SDK. The development platform includes a fully compliant Android library and system image as well as a set of emulator skins, sample applications, and more. The downloadable platform includes no external libraries.

To start developing or testing against Android 4.0.3, use the Android SDK Manager to download the platform into your SDK. For more information, see Adding SDK Components. If you are new to Android, download the SDK Starter Package first.

For a high-level overview of the new user and developer features, see the Platform Highlights.

Apple’s A5 chip reportedly now manufactured by Samsung in Texas

Apple and other consumer electronics companies typically look to the Far East for components, but a new report suggests that the production of Apple’s current mobile processors has now moved to the United States. Reuters on Friday reported that the chip powering Apple’s current iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models is now manufactured in a new 1.6 million square foot Samsung factory located in Austin, Texas. The report cites unnamed people familiar with Samsung’s operations. Samsung’s new Austin facility — which is the size of nine football fields — reportedly reached full production earlier this month, and it was built to manufacture non-memory chips. The South Korea-based company confirmed that its Texas plant was recently expanded to manufacture logic chips, though it would not comment specifically on Apple or its A5 processor. Reuters reported earlier this year that Samsung lost the contract to build Apple’s next-generation A6 processor, which will instead be manufactured by Taiwan-based chip maker TSMC.

Adobe updates Flash to 11.1 with support for Ice Cream Sandwich

Adobe announced an update to its Flash Player on Friday that provides support for Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Prior to Friday, Flash was not officially supported by Android 4.0 on the

Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the only device currently running Google’s latest mobile operating system. Adobe noted a few known issues with its release, including one that does not prioritize the audio during an incoming call. That means any current Flash clip will play audio before and after the call is received. In addition, the “enter” key does not work in multi-line text input fields. Those sound like minor bugs for full Flash support, though. Galaxy Nexus owners, or anyone with Ice Cream Sandwich installed on a rooted device, should be able to find the Flash app in the Android Market now. Adobe announced in November that it would cease development of its mobile Flash Player, so this could be one of the last releases we see.

Apple may launch ‘iPad mini’ in Q3

Apple is reportedly working on a smaller version of its popular iPad tablet that will launch in the third quarter next year. Citing sources in Apple’s parts supply chain, DigiTimes on Friday claimed that a new iPad with a 7.85-inch display will enter production at the end of the second quarter. LG Display and AU Optronics will supply the panels, according to the site’s report. DigiTimes suggests that Apple, which previously stated that a 7-inch display was too small for a tablet, will build the smaller slate to “cope with increasing market competition including the 7-inch Kindle Fire from Amazon and the launch of large-size smartphones from handset vendors.” Earlier reports from Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White suggested that Apple would launch an “iPad mini” in 2012, but that mini referred to a lower price in the high-$200 range rather than a smaller form factor.

Ainol unveils NOVO7 Paladin with Android 4.0 ICS for only USD 79

NOVO7 tablet is no longer the world’s cheapest Android 4.0 tablet and it has lost its crown to yet another tablet from China from the same makers. Ainol has rolled out another 7-inch tablet, NOVO7 Paladin, running Ice Cream Sandwich for only $79. While the Ingenic processor and 7 inch form factor is safe and sound, a few important features are nixed to make way for the world’s cheapest ICS tablet at $79.

NOVO 7 Paladin got the Ice Cream Sandwich treat thanks to the Ingenic 1GHz MIPS Xburst CPU just like its big brother NOVO7. It also has 444MHz Vivante GPU, USB ports and microSD card slot, but has to do away with camera to achieve the $79 pricing.

It has the 7-inch capacitive screen with multi touch support and 1080p video capability. It still boasts an excellent battery life with standby time of 300 hours; 25 hours for music play back, 8 hours for video and 7 hours of web browsing.

HTC EVO View 4G drops to $229, one day only

There are certainly quite a few amazing Android devices available this holiday season, but it’s still hard to find something great at a decent price. Yes, there’s the Kindle Fire or the Nook Tablet, but they simply don’t have the same Android feel that most of us have come to love.

If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, we suggest you check out the HTC EVO View 4G from Daily Steals. For today only, the Android tablet is being sold for $229 without a contract. The HTC EVO View 4G is Sprint’s variant of the HTC Flyer, which adds 4G WiMax support and 32 GB of internal storage. Anyone who may be interested needs to act fast, since the deal expires at midnight!

For now, the HTC View 4G is still running Gingerbread, but we’re expecting to see a Honeycomb update within the next few months. If you do grab the HTC View 4G, don’t forget to pick up HTC’s digital pen.

1. Apple iPad 2

Thinner, lighter and more powerful than its predecessor, the mighty iPad easily sustained its reign as the king of tablets this year. Though the competition appears to be heating up with the introduction of a fleet of Android tablets ranging in size, price and features, Apple's venerable touchscreen wonder still has plenty of sunny skies ahead of it. It may have the best apps and interface out there right now, and the sheer enormity of its mind share keeps just about everyone equating the concept of tablet computing first and foremost with the iPad.

Sony's XBA balanced armature in-ear headphone lineup headed to the US, we go ears-on

We just met with Sony at its New York City store on Madison Ave. in Midtown, and boy did it have some excellent news for in-ear headphone lovers. While sitting down in the PlayStation Lounge, we briefly demoed nearly every piece of its lineup of XBA balanced armature intra-aurals, which if you'll recall, were announced for parts of Asia back in September. While the 11-model lineup, ranging from standard buds to Bluetooth and noise-cancelling sets, is just beginning to hit those regions now, we've been told that folks in the US can expect them to arrive on American shores next year, with official availability details due at CES. The units we checked out are voiced and finished as those set to hit production, but according to Sony, some of the cabling now in place will change before the stateside release. Interested audiophiles and music lovers can click on past the break for the full details, as well as our initial -- and brief -- impressions.

T-Mobile to bring Nokia Lumia 710 smartphone to U.S. in January

T-Mobile is bringing the Nokia Lumia 710 smartphone to the U.S. in January, the companies announced Wednesday.

The entry-level phone is the first Windows Phone from Nokia in the U.S. and is targeted at the 150 million Americans who have yet to make the transition to smartphones.

The Nokia Lumia 710, capable of running on T-Mobile's 4G network, "delivers high-performance hardware, Nokia's best social and Internet experience, and access to popular smartphone applications and services from Windows Phone Marketplace," the companies said in a statement.

The phone provides one-click access services such as Netflix and also gives users access to signature Nokia experiences, including voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation.

"Windows Phone offers a compelling mobile OS choice for people who want a smartphone built around them, their family and friends," said Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer of T-Mobile USA. "We expect it to play a more prominent role in our lineup and marketing efforts in 2012."

Brodman noted that the company's research showed "nearly everybody in the U.S. wants a smartphone," but many couldn't afford one.

Chris Weber, president of Nokia Americas, said the Nokia Lumia 710 was the ideal "first-time smartphone" that delivered the most compelling Windows Phone experience in its price range.

"This is the perfect first Nokia Lumia experience and the start of our reentry into the U.S. smartphone market," Weber said.

Available in a black or white finish, the Nokia Lumia 710 features a 3.7-inch scratch-resistant display and a Qualcomm 1.4 GHz Snapdragon processor. It also has a 5-megapixel camera with Nokia's camera technology, enabling people to take pictures in almost any light and share the shot on social networks in seconds.

The Nokia Lumia 710 is scheduled to be available online and at T-Mobile retail stores, select dealers and retailers nationwide starting Jan. 11. The smartphone is expected to cost $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate card, with a two-year service agreement and qualifying Classic voice-and-data plan

Gogii joins the Wi-Fi calling pioneers with new

Gogii joins the Wi-Fi calling pioneers with new

Want to pay less than $1 for phone calls? Shell out for an iPod Touch and make sure you’re near a Wi-Fi network. It’s possible with a new app from Gogii, the maker of popular messaging app TextPlus, which is launching a new service called TextPlus Free Calls that enables a host of devices, even Wi-Fi-only devices, to make and receive phone calls for free or very cheaply.
With TextPlus Free Calls, users will be able to make unlimited free phone calls to other TextPlus members. And because TextPlus connects to traditional PSTN phone systems, users can connect directly to regular phone numbers at rates starting at 99 cents for 40 minutes without a contract or plans. Free trial minutes will be available to users who sign up. Devices like the iPod Touch will now be able to serve as phone replacements through Text Plus Free Calls running over Wi-Fi.
There’s some caveats but it’s another sign that Wi-Fi calling is getting bigger and a lot easier for consumers. But it’s not just for Wi-Fi only devices:TextPlus can help cell phone users reduce their voice minutes to the lowest plan while running their calls over Wi-Fi and 3G data.
The iOS app, which is separate from the TextPlus Free messaging app, is available now and will be in the Android Market shortly. Users will be able to use one account across multiple devices and will be able to access their call history and voice mail from any device.
The move pits TextPlus against a growing number of IP-based communications competitors, dubbed NUVO or Network Unaffiliated Virtual Operators by Sybase. Many of the group text messaging services fall into this category and a smaller number of providers also offer voice services, some that come with their phone number like Google Voice and Pinger’s TextFree and others like Viber that don’t. By connecting to the PSTN, Text Plus Free Calls can send and receive calls to and from phones that don’t use the app.
The rise of these services are forcing traditional carriers to rethink their business models. The messaging apps are helping wean users off SMS text messages by connecting users directly over the Internet. And voice services are increasingly offering direct connections that allow users to forgo highly reliable phone calls and monthly data plans, for pay-as-you-go voice services that can offer free or very cheap calls.
It presages a future where voice is just an app on the data network, something carriers themselves are also slowly learning. Sprint has teamed with Google Voice to let people use their Google Voice number while AT&T recently released an International VoIP calling app. Republic Wireless, a division of Bandwidth.com which connects Pinger and Google Voice to the PSTN, recently launched Republic Wireless, offering users a $19 a month voice and data plan that relies heavily on Wi-Fi calling.
Scott Lahman, CEO of Gogii, said carriers can still compete on delivering 4G and high quality, reliable phone service. But he said there is a growing market for simple voice calls that can connect people. And that will change what consumers need from their carriers: fewer or no voice minutes and lots of data. Carriers such as T-Mobile also appear to be responding, offering a plan with just 100 minutes and data.
“We’re on the cusp of the most interesting time in the brief history of mobile,” said Lahman. “The internet has not done its thing in mobile until recently.”
TextPlus, which launched in 2009 and has hit 20 billion messages sent to date, also provides social elements inside its communications apps. Gogii has raised $28 million to date including a $15 million round earlier this year.

Kick-Ass! Web Android Market Now Allows App User Review Filtering By Device Model, Latest Version, And Specific Star Rating

Looks like the new Email Developer feature that the web Android Market received on Friday was just the icing on the cake! While it was nice to finally have the ability to contact developers without having to go through the device Market, it was still a pretty minor addition. Don't fret - Google was nowhere near being done - you can now:
filter user reviews by device model, currently limited to All and individual devices registered to your account.
filter user reviews by app version, currently limited to All or Latest
filter user reviews by specific star rating
Here, have a look (the sample app I used was Christmas HD, if you are curious):
image image image
The beauty is - you can combine filters and, for example, narrow down to only 1-star reviews made by users of HTC EVO 3D that used the latest version of the app.
Brilliant - it's exactly what we've been asking for, thanks, Google! The only thing I can think of is maybe expanding the version list to contain 4-5 previous versions, but it's probably not going to happen due to complexities that may arise from the multi-APK support.
Thanks for the tip, Daniel Monza!

Solar Altoids iPhone/ iPod Charger

I love my iPhone 4 to death. I really do. Even if it sucks juice faster than a 1st grader at snack time and I often find myself on low power with a long train ride ahead of me.

I originally made my Altoids USB Charger to use with my iPhone, only to find that Apple being Apple doesn't let it's products play nice with generic USB chargers. I then set out on a long journey to find a cheap charger that would work with an iPhone 4. After sacrificing many a cheap Chinese charger to my garbage can I eventually found a great little circuit with the added bonus of having a retractable cable.

It's a cheap and easy project to put together and a great gift to give.

Time: 30-60 minutes
Cost: Under $20
Difficulty: Easy

Step 1What You Need

Parts:
Charging Circuit
2x AA Battery Holder
2x Rechargeable Batteries
1N914 Blocking Diode
Solar Cell greater than 4V
Stranded Wire
Tape

Optional:
Altoids Tin

Tools:
Soldering Iron
Solder
Hot Glue Gun
Wire Strippers
Protective Goggles

If you're interested in this project I have kits available on my website, www.mediagadjets.com, that have everything you need to make the charger. If you're not one for making things I sell premade chargers as well.

More than 12% of all profits go to dog and kitty toys. You wouldn't make a kitty cry, would you?
